Sri Lanka – March 1st 2024,

The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, the Government of Sri Lanka and M/s. U Solar Clean Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd signed the contract for the implementation of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems in Delft, Nainativu and Analaitivu islands off Jaffna in the presence of High Commissioner of India H.E Santosh Jha and Minister of State for Power and Energy Indika Anuruddha. U-Solar Clean Energy, the fastest growing solar EPC and developers in India, having a remarkable 300 MWp execution experience, has joined hands with Ryse Energy, a global leader in distributed renewable energy solutions for wind turbines.

The Honourable Kanchana Wijesekera, Minister of Power and Energy, has announced a significant development in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. Through a generous financial grant of USD 10.995 million extended by the Government of India, the islands of Delft, Analativu, and Nainativu will soon be equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid renewable energy systems. It is anticipated that these systems will be fully operational by March 2025. The project, which is aimed at addressing the energy needs of the people of the three islands, is being executed through grant assistance from the Government of India (GOI).

The hybrid project combines various forms of energy including both solar and wind, towards optimizing capacities. “The project with 530 kw Wind power, 1700 kw Solar power, 2400 kwh Battery power and 2500 kw of stand-by diesel power system will be constructed at the 3 Islands by U-SOLAR. I thank the Government of the Republic of India, HE Santosh Jha High Commissioner India in Sri Lanka, Former High Commissioner HE Gopal Bagalay, and officials of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka for the assistance,” added Kanchana Wijesekera Ministry of Power & Energy.

By integrating these different technologies, the project aims to optimize energy generation and ensure a consistent and reliable power supply to these regions. GOI’s assistance to the project for the people of the three islands, which are not connected to the national grid, underscores the significance attached by GOI to bilateral energy partnership as well as the human-centric nature of development partnership. It may be recalled that the energy sector was identified as a priority area in the India-Sri Lanka Economic Partnership Vision document which was adopted during the visit of President H.E Ranil Wickremesinghe to India in July 2023. Several landmark initiatives such as the power grid connectivity, and multi-product two-way oil pipeline are currently under discussion between India and Sri Lanka in the energy sphere. As the governing body responsible for pioneering the sustainable energy revolution in Sri Lanka, the Chairman at Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority will act as the focal point for this project.

This pioneering collaboration brings together U-Solar’s solar and battery systems, combined with Ryse
Energy’s wind turbine technology, to effectively power three islands located off the coast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. This ground-breaking project represents a substantial step towards the widespread adoption of distributed renewable energy sources, highlighting our unwavering commitment to utilizing environmentally-friendly alternatives and driving positive change within the energy sector.

Mr. K.R. Harinarayan, Founder and CEO of U-Solar Clean Energy Solutions said,
“A project of this stature is complex in many ways, the three islands are remotely located, and the technology integration will be one of a kind in the world. However, we are working with some leaders in the Indian and Global markets for modules, inverters, batteries as well as wind turbines. We have diligently studied this project
and our team has also visited the site before putting together a comprehensive bid. Our commitment to the vision of the Indian and Sri Lankan government is unwavering.”

Alistair Munro, Founder & CEO of Ryse Energy commented:
“I am thrilled to announce our major project to power Sri Lanka with distributed wind. This landmark partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to provide sustainable and accessible energy solutions worldwide. Many thanks to our Asia office based locally in Colombo for the excellent collaborative work with U-Solar to make this project a reality.

The project not only aligns with Sri Lanka’s ambitious sustainability goals but also showcases our commitment to innovating in the field of distributed renewable energy. We are honored to be at the forefront of this transformation, bringing clean, reliable energy to the communities of Jaffna and setting a benchmark for
renewable projects worldwide”.
