Is Bangalore Weather Suitable for Solar?

Table of Contents

Bangalore weather never disappoints the residents citing in Bangalore. Bangalore has 280 days of sunny weather out of 365 days. The people of Bangalore are accustomed to the evening drizzle and might think solar is not suitable. But the truth is the solar system works best at moderate temperature.

Before jumping to the conclusion let us first understand how the solar photovoltaic (PV) system works.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) uses cells to convert sunlight into electricity. There are three types of radiation when the sun comes out in the morning: Normal radiation, Global radiation, and Diffused radiation. In normal radiation the sun rays fall directly on us, in global radiation, the sun rays are scattered, fall on us, and in diffused radiation sun rays partially pass through the clouds. Global radiation and diffused radiation occur when there is a greater number of clouds in the sky. When the sunlight falls on the panels, the lights are converted into electricity by the photovoltaic cells and the amount of electricity that will be generated depends upon the following factor:

  • Temperature
  • Wind
  • Daily sunlight hours
  • Angle of sunlight
  • Shadow or obstruction on the premises
  • Type of solar panels i.e., monocrystalline or polycrystalline panels

Solar Panels can work efficiently during high temperatures and can withstand winds up to 60mph under ideal conditions. The efficiency of solar panels depends upon the panel type. Monocrystalline panels have higher efficiency than polycrystalline panels as monocrystalline panels are made of a single crystal of silicon whereas polycrystalline panels are made of multiple crystals of silicon.

The below-illustrated graph will show the average temperature of Bangalore weather:

Let us illustrate more with an example:

The first apartment in Bangalore to go 100% solar is Brigade Petunia, Banashankari. They have installed a 96.2 kWp solar rooftop system.

Details about the project:

Panels: 325Wp Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Panel Make: Vikram Solar

Inverter: Solar Edge Inverter was used

Let us analyze the solar generation for Brigade Petunia for the last 12 months:

From the above example, we can confidently conclude that Bangalore weather is perfect for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System to work efficiently. The investment one makes today in setting up a solar power plant at their facility will surely get back their return on investment within 4-5 years.
