Solar works best with LED lights. LED based street lights for roads within a layout or campus makes tremendous economic sense. Instead of using 250w and 150w HPSV and Metal halide fixtures, one may use low wattage 35w and 50w LED based fixtures. These energy efficient lights may be optionally powered using solar energy on a stand-alone basis or can be powered from a centralised system.
With stand alone street lighting, cumbersome and expensive cabling is done away with and the stand-alone units which have built-in dawn to dusk functionality enable them to run autonomously through the year.
Centralised systems offer ease of maintenance with easy access to modules and batteries thus enabling increased battery life. Centralised systems work very well for very large campuses with existing cables. Centralised system also allows for grid backup for street lights in case of extremely unfavourable weather conditions.
